Baker Steam Engines, Educate Me David A Laughead Jr. Jan 26th 2010 09:19pm
Hey Everyone
Got to thinking about it this week and have realized I know very little about Baker steam engines so I thought I would start a conversation here so we can all discuss and learn. Guess I will start this by just asking some simple questions.

What are the Baker Models? I have heard of say... 21-75, 23-90, and something about a rare 25 that a club member owns

What makes the Baker's more desireable than the other makes?

What model is Baker #1 and the last Baker made?
Thanks all, Dave

Baker #1 is a 16hp old style (obviously) "light duty" counterflow valve with the bell stack. It is similar to Casey Besecker's engine. These engines were mostly painted red with some green on small parts and pinstripes. Baker #17992 is a 21-75 "Baker Special" "Heavy Duty" counterflow. It has many parts in common with the 23-90. The rear wheels and most of the gearing are interchangeable. The smoke stack is also straight and the same as a 23-90 (and possibly the 25). Ultimately there are a lot more differences between the two and a diagram showing the piston valve of a uniflow and the slide valve of the counterflow will help to better explain that as well.

Uniflow Steam engine cylinder configuration, taken from the wikipedia here. A Pretty good explaination of the uniflow system.

A good article about Abner D. Baker and his inventions can be found by following the link and scrolling down to the last article towards the bottom of the page. It also includes a picture of a steam tractor.
